A Sea Turtle Adventure

Exploring Zapatilla Island:

Exploring the wonders of Zapatilla Island in Bocas del Toro is a bucket-list experience for many, but for the students at Bocas Academy, it’s a regular adventure that leaves a lasting impact. Situated in the heart of the Caribbean Sea, the Zapatilla Islands are a pristine and uninhabited paradise, protected by local communities and conservation efforts.

During our recent visit, the kids spent the morning swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, marveling at the vibrant marine life that calls this place home. But the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly our encounter with the sea turtles that inhabit these waters.

The Zapatilla Islands are a crucial nesting ground for sea turtles, with over 4,000 hatchings protected each year. This is a testament to the conservation efforts in Panama, which, in collaboration with the Smithsonian, have worked tirelessly to protect these majestic creatures and their habitat.

Sea turtles have a remarkable life cycle, with females returning to the same beach where they were born to nest. This incredible journey highlights the importance of protecting these nesting sites, as they are essential for the survival of sea turtle populations.

For the students at Bocas Academy, these sea turtle adventures are not just about observing nature; they’re about learning the importance of environmental conservation and our role in protecting the planet. Through hands-on experiences like these, we hope to instill in our students a deep respect for nature and a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

As we navigate through life, it’s important to remember that we all share this planet together – one world, one ocean. By teaching our children to respect and protect the environment, we are ensuring a brighter future for generations to come. So, next time you’re on a beach, remember the sea turtles of Zapatilla Island and the important role they play in our ecosystem.
